Elbow Stiffness

Dr Marcus Chia - Elbow Surgeon

Dr Marcus Chia offers specialist management and surgery of elbow stiffness including stiff elbow surgery.

The elbow is not a very tolerant joint. The most common problem following any elbow injury or surgery is stiffness. Even trivial elbow injuries can cause stiffness. It is possible for bone to form in the soft tissues around the elbow (heterotopic ossification).

Xrays and CT scans are typically necessary to assess the joint and determine the cause of the stiffness.

The mainstay of treatment is range of motion and stretching exercises under the supervision of a therapist. Dr Chia may also suggest elbow splints. If a functional range of motion is not achieved, Dr Chia may suggest surgery. Surgery may be done either by open or ‘key-hole’ (arthroscopic) means dependent on the extent and cause of the stiffness. It is important to note that such surgery will not restore motion to normal.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. The information provided here is for general educational purposes only.
